GE Acquires CCCQE™ Software form Clinical Content Consultants, LLC
On January 6, 2006, GE Healthcare completed an Asset Purchase Agreement (APA) with Clinical Content Consultants, LLC (CCC) pursuant to which GE acquired CCC’s CCCQE™ software, consisting of rich multi-specialty clinical content, Computer Provider Order Entry (CPOE), and advanced Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS). Since the acquisition CCCQE™ Version 8.3.5 has been released and is now available to CCCQE™ subscribers.
With enhanced CPOE and CDSS functionality and many new text file editors, CCCQE™ Version 8.3.5 allows providers to further customize and develop clinical content and decision support modules. The new HPI Specialty-Specific and Category-Specific Review of System forms will allow any provider to rapidly document a specialty and problem specific narrative note facilitating enhanced clinical decision support and improved quality of care while facilitating compliance with various insurance requirements.
The acquisition will allow GE to integrate the functionality of CCCQE™ into the Centricity Physician Office EMR, making it an advanced fifth generation EMR. Over the next twelve months, CCC will continue to provide support of the CCCQE™ software, eventually transitioning support over to GE as the software becomes fully integrated into Centricity Physician Office EMR. Patti Hickam, Director of Support and Implementation Services for CCC will continue to head up support of the CCCQE™ software and oversee the transition of support to GE to assure the high level of customer service during the transition period.
CCC will continue to operate as an independent consulting company providing customized clinical content development, customized EMR implementations, workflow reengineering, specialty-specific clinical decision support applications, and voice recognition integration (VRI). GE and CCC have entered into separate Qualified Service Provider (QSP) and License agreements, which provide CCC the necessary licensing rights to continue to provide the above services. Such agreements provide GE access to future integration of CCC custom clinical content developments.
CCC is a physician owned and operated company founded in November of 2000 by John J. Janas III, MD of Concord, NH and John R. Thompson, MD of Little Rock Arkansas. In addition to the above, CCC is currently in year one of a four year multi-specialty EMR integration and development project with the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Eventually, the sale to GE will allow CCC to focus even more time and resources on this and other development and implementation projects for users of Centricity Physician Office EMR.
As mentioned above, CCC will continue to develop, implement, and support CCC VRI (voice recognition integration) within Centricity Physician Office EMR. Michael Janas, VP of Marketing and Development for CCC will continue to head a development and implementation team to provide Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8.0 Medical voice recognition software with integration functionality designed exclusively for Centricity Physician Office EMR customers. Under agreements with GE and Nuance (formerly ScanSoft), CCC will continue to offer successful voice recognition integration into Centricity Physician Office EMR.
Q: Did GE buy CCC the company. Is CCC going away? Are CCC employees going to work for GE?
A: GE acquired only the CCCQE™ software not the entire company. CCC and its employees will continue to work closely with GE and have signed long term agreements to facilitate those efforts. CCC will continue to work with GE to provide high quality customer service during the transition period. John Janas, MD and John Thompson, MD will continue to develop customized clinical content and clinical decision support while the rest of the CCC team provides customization related consulting services for users of Centricity Physician Office EMR.

CCC VRI: Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical with Voice Recognition Integration into Centricity Physician Office EMR
CCC VRI is designed to simplify the task of learning – and using – voice recognition.
CCC VRI is an enhanced system, based on Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9, which integrates voice recognition with the EMR. Voice recognition can be used to minimize, and even replace, dictation.
Many of the underlying functions within the CCC forms are voice-activated....allowing many operations to be performed via a voice command. For example, the command “Add diagnosis hypertension” adds a diagnosis of Hypertension to the patient’s problem list – from anywhere within that chart update.
Specially-designed, targeted voice commands can save three to four minutes of time spent documenting the patient visit...per patient.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need to purchase my own copy of Dragon 9 Medical?
No. Each license of CCC VRI comes with a full Dragon 9 Medical license.
Do I need multiple licenses to load the software on multiple machines?
No. CCC VRI is licensed per user. Each user can load the software in multiple locations, (i.e. office, exam room, home computer.)
What are the system requirements?
MINIMUM System Requirements
- Windows XP or 2000
- Minimum 2 GB RAM for local Centricity installation (1GB for Citrix or Terminal Server)
- Minimum Pentium IV, 1 GHz or comparable (Recommended 2.4 GHz)
- 6 GB Free Hard Drive Disk Space
- 16 Bit Soundca
What is the basis for these recommendations?
Voice recognition is a large consumer of system resources. In order to maintain acceptable performance and allow other applications to run simultaneously, sufficient system resources are ESSENTIAL. PERFORMANCE IS DEPENDANT UPON A COMBINATION OF PROCESSOR SPEED AND MEMORY. Minimum processor speed and minimum memory will provide the minimum acceptable performance. Increasing resources in either area (processor speed or RAM) toward recommended specifications will improve performance. CCC VRI utilizes virtual memory to assist in the processing, and 6 to 10 GB of free hard drive space provides the best performance.
What if I don’t meet these recommendations?
There is an option to install Dragon 8 Medical instead of Dragon 9. The hardware requirements are not as high, and the performance is perfectly acceptable. If machine specifications do not allow Dragon 9, then Dragon 8 is a viable option. The pricing is the same for Dragon 8 or Dragon 9. For Dragon 8 the memory and processor requirements are changed as follows.
- Minimum 1 GB RAM for local Centricity installation (512 MB for Citrix or Terminal Server)
- Minimum Pentium III, 800 MHz or comparable (Recommend P IV 2.4 GHz)
Is a special microphone required?
CCC recommends, and can provide, one of two voice recognition microphones. One is a handheld device which also functions as a trackball and mouse. The other is a headset option for hands-free operation. Microphones can be purchased from CCC or directly from the manufacturer.
Does CCC VRI work in the Citrix or terminal server environment?
CCC VRI must run on a local client installation. With that being said, if CCC VRI can be loaded on a local client it will function within an EMR through a Citrix or terminal server connection. The voice recognition is treated as another input device (like the keyboard). Dragon 9 has the option to install directly on the Citrix server and function as a published application. This does require more RAM allocation per user and should be discussed with IT before making your decision.
Is this Dragon Medical?
CCC VRI works with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 - Medical. A full license of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 - Medical is included with each CCC VRI license. You do not need to purchase Dragon separately. If you already own a Dragon NaturallySpeaking license, the price of CCC VRI is reduced due to the removal of the Dragon licensing requirement.
How is CCC VRI different from Dragon alone or other EMR voice recognition products?
CCC VRI has a streamlined and targeted training process which maximizes the functionality to the end user for use in the EMR. CCC VRI is integrated with the CCC forms and the internal functions. This automates many tasks which would ordinarily require multiple button clicks and/or keystrokes.
CCC VRI identifies the repetitious button click EMR tasks and automates them through voice activation. A process or task that requires multiple mouse clicks can now be done with a single voice command.
CCC VRI is integrated with the CCC multi-factorial functions. With a multi-factorial function, one MEL function can complete multiple tasks inside Centricity. This capability can be embedded within voice commands to allow a single voice command to order a medication, place an order (or orders), and document a procedure.
CCC VRI utilizes the Voice Recognition as a tool to optimize the use of the EMR rather than an alternative to the EMR. A solid understanding of the EMR allows the user to get the most out of the potential of the Voice Recognition.
